Great recipe, excellent flavour. In my opinion it doesn't need the browning sauce. And in that location was no measurement for a seasoning sauce - didn't know what information technology was, and then didn't employ that either. I did substitute some of the broth with left over roast beef gravy for improve flavor. Plus I only didn't desire to waste annihilation. From that point I but put everything in the crockpot except for potatoes - it's quite hearty plenty without them - and cooked on low for well-nigh 8 hours. Makes a ton of soup which suits me well as I try to accept as many meals in the freezer as possible to suit my busy life. Simply as a postscript - I retrieve the importance of sautéing vegetables for any soup is sometimes under-rated. It's a pace that imparts and so much flavour, and really doesn't accept that much fourth dimension.

A fantastic soup. I found that 3/iv c of barley made it very thick. I would cut information technology down next time to 1/2 to ii/iii c. The wine difinitely gives it a nice flavour.
x/21/2003
This soup was quite hearty, so I increased the beef stock to 12 cups from 10. Also, the recipe ingredients did non listing the Bay Leaf, although the instructions practice. Also, the instructions don't tell y'all when to use the garlic that is listed in the ingredients, and then I sauteed information technology with the celery, onions and carrots. I used Campbell's Beefiness Broth (Low Sodium a must!) in the boxes, NOT the cans...I didn't want the tinny taste that usually stems from a can. Was a good soup, merely I imagine that it will exist much more flavourful the side by side day.
04/20/2002
This is a wonderful, like shooting fish in a barrel, hearty soup. I tried it once w/o the vino and got raves when I shared it with an bilious friend. The second fourth dimension with the wine it was even ameliorate! A slap-up utilize for leftover beefiness. Great with crusty french bread and a salad. Next day even better!
12/28/2006
Love the cabbage and red wine in this recipe! I also added one can of petite diced tomatoes (undrained), and I doubled all of the veggies except potato (which I actually halved & used reddish potato). Used dried italian herb mix instead of thyme, increased broth by a few cups, and did not apply browning sauce. Oops! Bought regular pearlized barley instead of quick-cooking... had to simmer extra half-hour, but it was fantabulous nonetheless! I used Xmas dinner'south left-over prime rib for the beef, ooooh yummy.
01/29/2006
Great recipe, although some proofreading from the submitter would take been a proficient idea. The ingredients list is missing the BAY Leaf and the directions is missing the GARLIC. I forgot the garlic and it tasted fine. I would recommend a fleck more beefiness stock since the soup turns out very mesomorphic. You don't really demand to add salt if yous get regular not low-sodium beef broth. Overall dandy archetype recipe.
08/29/2010
And so succulent! The just alter I made was by using lentils instead as I was out of barley. My hubby loved it! Side by side time I'll exist sure to have the barley on manus.
ten/thirty/2009
I loved this recipe, but, I did modify, simply slightly. I took about 6 cups of water , and dissolved two packets of SODIUM Gratuitous HERBOX Instant Goop Seasoning, Beef Season, no MSG, no Gluten, fabricated past Hormel Foods. I besides pressure cooked some stew beef and used that, and the liquid from that, to add to my huge pot. I doubled everything, and did not add the barley until everything else was in there. Oh, and instead of vino, I used a actually nighttime double dunken beer, i bottle. Fabricated enough for an army, so I froze some for later! Hearty soup, didn't miss the sodium at all!
03/08/2005
YUMMM! I left out the cabbage so that my daughter would eat it ! I did it in the crockpot for four hours on high and it was great.
11/22/2002
Very good. I added mushrooms too. My husband loved information technology !!!! thanks S.
03/03/2016
We both loved this soup. It was hearty, very flavourful and very filling. I did brand a few changes due to personal taste. I didn't add the potatoes or the cabbage but did add a package of sliced cremini mushrooms. I cut the barley back to i/2 loving cup after reading the reviews and it was still very thick. I didn't add browning sauce, couldn't find whatsoever in our area so I added a cap full of Bovril. There was no fresh thyme to exist found and then after googling information technology I added 1tsp of dried. This is my new favourite soup from this site and I will be making information technology again and once again. Thanks and then much for sharing BarbCA.
02/02/2009
Really good! I made this during the Superbowl for my all-time friend. It was elementary enough that I could pay attention to the game hands and he and I absolutely loved the bulky flavor and the barley.
01/xvi/2010
This turned out really well, and was even better the next twenty-four hours. Volition definitely be making this recipe again.
03/x/2011
Succulent, and I haven't even added the wine! It was hard to terminate tasting the goop! I had some tough beefiness round leftover that seemed a shame to throw out. Sliced it sparse and in small pieces and it worked out simply fine. I thought I had barley afterwards starting this creation just had to substitute lentils. I did not have any dried or fresh thyme. I used 64 oz of lower sodium beef goop, a few more chopped vegetables than stated, some left over canned diced tomatoes and I don't feel like I take to add together too much more to enhance the season. I did not add together the potatoes or browning sauce. Because I added more than vegetables and 2 Cups less goop, the soup is a thicker vegetable soup. Healthy and succulent!
03/08/2015
This was a not bad recipe! I did make a couple of changes. First, I used mushrooms (baby bella) instead of potatoes, since I figured they would taste very skillful with the soup and since barley already provides enough starch. Secondly, I used raw sirloin. After sauteeing the vegetables, I added the cabbage and sauteed information technology with them. And so, I removed the vegetables from the pan and added just the meat. I browned the meat and added the mushrooms, then I deglazed the pan with the vino. Afterwards that, I added the vegetables dorsum to the soup, and finally added the broth and the barley. This soup was amazingly good, and I volition definitely make it again and over again!
08/29/2006
This recipe is a very good base for someone making soup for the showtime time. I used leftover brisket and added the drippings, a handful of peppercorns, and whole garlic cloves. Perfect for those blustery nights.
12/26/2008
I have made this so many times over the years. I just discovered that I haven't reviewed information technology. It is absolutely delicious and a winter favorite in our business firm. The only change I make is using hamburger instead of the beef roast. I usually make it on the stove top, but I've made it in the crock pot for events and it turns out great. I'1000 certain you will bask this recipe.
11/eighteen/2005
This recipe was slap-up. I made it two weeks ago and am making it over again tonight. I fabricated information technology with a diced up sirloin steak. I doubled the wine to one loving cup and added garlic and mushrooms. Tonight I am going to endeavour information technology with the 'Dumplings' recipe also from this site.
02/19/2006
This was an fantabulous recipe! Very flavorful. I cooked my roast in a ho-hum cooker, so used the broth in the soup (and added more broth to it.) I loved the addition of the cabbage.
eleven/06/2007
I made it more than every bit a tedious cooker repast. And so I didn't cook meat earlier hand, so no oil. Also I didn't add the cabbage, but added fresh basil, cilantro, and dried bay leafs. Overall practiced repast, and swell to freeze for later.
10/24/2000
I don't make soup often because of all the chopping. Notwithstanding, this one is worth information technology. It is very flavorful. Made information technology again 3/2006. I used sirloin and didn't utilize the cabbage. I also added a tin of chopped tomatoes.
04/01/2006
I used left over crock pot roast beef and this was the best soup I've ever eaten!
10/17/2007
This was delicious. I put the barley in with the potatoes and meat and added a piddling seasoned salt and fresh ground pepper. I will definately brand once again.
04/23/2007
Absolutely yummy!! Followed directions exactly and information technology was a striking. Information technology makes a lot, so I froze some. I will definitely be making this again!
05/20/2012
Skillful but I would have like a little more spice or herbs. I used left over brisket which worked great. Loved all the vegies! Wish I had had the browning sauce but I didn't. Good recipe!
02/16/2012
This was a very nice simple soup. Made it up very quickly on a rainy day. It hit the spot. Thanks for posting the recipe.
02/19/2007
I accept fabricated this a few times for my family. My daughter loves all the veggies in it. I love to make a big pot on a Lord's day, this manner we have it for the week.
06/27/2007
I halved the recipe & made it with leftover london broil. I ommited the celery (don't like it) & the browning sauce (don't take whatsoever). I bought quick cooking barley & added it during the last 15 mins of cooking ( you tin find barley by the rice, I got mine at King Soopers). Make sure you lot take the bay leaf out at the end, the directions do non say to. It was good just lacking flavor. Thanks.
05/29/2003
This was first-class!! There are simply 3 of united states of america in my family unit and nosotros can never eat a whole london broil. I do non like reheated ruby meat. This was a bang-up mode to use the leftovers. I will brand this again and again. Thank you.
x/25/2014
Fantastic! Great way to utilize leftovers. Had a leftover pot roast with potatoes, carrots and onions. Cut all that upwardly finely, added some actress fresh carrots, celery, garlic and onions too equally soy sauce. Omitted wine and cabbage as I didn't accept any on mitt. Simmered unabridged pot for virtually thirty minutes total. The house smelled wonderful! Soup thickened upon cooling as barley absorbed the liquids. Made a huge pot of thick comforting soup.
11/twenty/2011
Excellent for leftover beef
11/04/2007
Very skillful soup. I did not apply the browning sauce. My family unit liked information technology alot.
02/10/2005
A very hearty and tasty soup! I used crumbled caribou burger instead of beef.
12/15/2014
Great Soup, i followed the recipe to a T and served it at a political party and near people liked it. Turned out to exist a footling salty, I used beef base instead of bullion or broth so i am not sure if that fabricated the deviation. I recollect next fourth dimension i will endeavor information technology with bullion instead, or depression sodium goop. I also did not add together the seasoning salt or the browning sauce.
01/25/2015
Used Napa instead of cabbage and information technology was very good. Threw in some cooked green beans likewise considering I had them! Definitely brand again.
06/08/2012
I made the recipe exactly as written and loved it. Great style to utilise leftover beef pot roast. Cheers!!
04/01/2004
Nosotros all enjoyed this recipe. I cutting the recipe in one-half to feed the three of us, and I even so have leftovers. I first made "Kathy'southward Roast and Vegetables" (also on this site), so used some of the leftover meat in this soup. I would hold that adding more than beef broth than called for would assistance--it is pretty chock full of ingredients. I endeavor that next time.
02/07/2013
Didn't take whatever potatoes just it was still proficient. i agree that the barley should exist cut down - I used 2/three loving cup and found it too thick. Also, I ended upwardly adding water to thin out the soup. But ease of cooking, flavor - can't be shell.
xi/11/2014
This is a great soup I had fabricated like earlier, this time I used leftover Corned Beef and the resulting h2o(diluted by 50% water) also I didnt add salt due to the stock that'south why I cutting with water. I didn't dark-brown the corned beef as it would ruin the coned beef's texture, I just fork pulled it like pulled pork. I also added more barley. This was an excellent utilise of both leftover CB too as a cracking way to use the fragrant stock!
03/17/2003
I practice not know why I didn't retrieve of this before for my left over roast! A great way to become the kids to eat it! A must take for your recipe box.
10/08/2001
was pretty skilful. My family said they swallow information technology again..
02/09/2001
the wine gave it just the right kick
01/09/2015
Excellent! Very tasty and hardy soup for a cold winter twenty-four hours. We loved it!
09/27/2016
Made this tonight for the family. Omitted the browning sauce. Added rosemary, oregano with the bay leaf and thyme. Cooking time was about an hour for the barley. Staggered the addition of the potatoes to the last 20/xxx minutes. Cabbage last 10/15. And so at the very end, the hubs hit it with a footling balsamic. Was very good.
12/xvi/2000
I actually, really enjoyed this recipe. At present, I don't have to cook from a can. It was fast, piece of cake and information technology tasted great.
12/03/2002
This was even better the second day! Nosotros similar our soups hearty and this one was great with our get-go snowstorm. A Keeper!
01/24/2015
I used home fabricated beef broth with this recipe and information technology was a masterpiece!
08/29/2018
Made it exactly to the recipe. Kind of bland at the end. Added a tin of beans and a tin of fire roasted tomatoes. Much better. Actually, the side by side time I brand this soup I'll add more celery, carrots and cabbage. May substitute spinach for cabbage.
12/15/2017
Delicious soup! Hearty and satisfying during these cold winter days. Left out potatoes and cabbage. Adjacent time volition exercise potatoes and get out out barley and cabbage. Very versatile recipe. Found the browning sauce and seasoning and it gives it expert color and flavor.
11/16/2017
I am making information technology for the second time. The 1st time, I made my broth with a left over roast. I am in the process of making it and once again I am unclear when it says to melt the barley until soft only not mushy -roughly how long that takes???. I have never cooked barley and observe myself checking information technology every few minutes. I can't call back how long it took from the first run! Information technology is a very tasty, hearty soup. Perfect for a cold, rainy November day!
04/xx/2016
I followed this recipe exactly as was written and it was absolutely crawly. I belong to Weight Watchers so I had to figure out the points (four). This volition be a staple in my firm. No need to change annihilation!
01/29/2019
This seemed similar a really bully recipe when I read it online, simply the directions to use "leftover potroast" wasn't a good matter, as we were using raw stew meat. PLUS, pearl barley, which is all that is availavle hither, takes TONS longer to cook and has to get through a couple of steps before it tin exist added to the mix. SO. I would say that if you lot are starting with raw meat instead of leftovers, and don't have 'regular' barley, that you need to allow about three-four hours to make this recipe. Or find a unlike ane, which is what I should take washed.
01/13/2019
Soooo tasty!!
08/28/2020
It was amazing!!! I volition be making this over again!! I added i cup and a one-half of barley instead of 3/4 cup. And instead of browning seasoning I used Liquid Smoke while browning the meat. Beat beef barley soup EVER!!
02/19/2019
Fantabulous, made a half recipe using Better than Boullion, (that's all I had), everything I used in the soup was on the verge
eleven/17/2018
We enjoyed this recipe, but it was too bland for our tastes. And then I recommend adding a can of diced tomatoes (do not bleed), and boosted spices, such as basil and/or oregano. I used a slow cooker as well.
02/26/2018
The spices used in this recipe really get in good. I didn't add whatsoever extra common salt, but was generous with the pepper to make the soup a little more bold (but not spicy hot). I added extra liquid as others suggested (12 cups instead of 10). At first, I thought it was too much and started to regret that conclusion, only after an hour or more of a slow simmer, the soup did thicken. I added some frozen (previously blanched) tomatoes that I had on manus. I did not back off on the barley (as some suggested), and since I added more liquid, I then added a little more barley. Perhaps I only like the extra barley. I volition definitely brand this time and again.
08/26/2015
Used homemade beef bone broth for this and upped the amounts of spices...got dandy reviews from the family!
01/02/2017
We loved information technology! Very filling and succulent.
12/xx/2018
"stick -to-your-ribs" Expert! I used everything except celery and browning sauce. I had fabricated a round roast that was as well tough to swallow, and then I cut it up in cubes and put it in the slow cooker with the soup. in a couple of hours it was melt-in-your-oral fissure DELICIOUS!
ten/01/2016
Now that was one hearty soup.
12/30/2018
I scaled this recipe dorsum to vi servings and used leftover prime number rib from Christmas Eve. It was a winner!
03/21/2018
Awesome soup for a cold dreary nighttime! Nosotros had ours with driblet biscuits! I used footing beef and not one complaint, only complements! My son even asked if I kept the recipe. He asked that I non change a matter. I told him I left out the cabbage and he said it wasn't necessary. I would accept to agree. This is a keeper.
eleven/09/2015
Hearty thick and delicious soup...esp. on a cold Wintertime twenty-four hours....or someday.
06/07/2017
Great flavor. Perfect to dip some bread in.
02/16/2019
Yeah I fabricated changes of course! All good cooks do! Calculation red wine, then the 2nd day I ate information technology cabbage. entirely dissimilar repast. Very good!!!
02/26/2019
I added 1 loving cup of barley, two cups carrots, i lb of ground venison instead of beef, 8 cups of broth and omitting the garlic simply because of allergy. This is really the 2d time i take made it. We absolutely love it
04/03/2016
Every bit others suggested I added a can of diced tomatoes with juice, no cabbage, two cups actress goop. This was an excellent hearty soup! Thanks!
12/30/2018
I scaled this recipe back to vi servings and used leftover prime rib from Christmas Eve. It was a winner!
09/15/2016
Dearest this recipe and because of my fussy girl I do not add the cabbage and it is notwithstanding really adept.
01/01/2018
Great recipe as is. Used prime rib leftovers.
09/20/2020
Fantabulous recipe. I did make a few changes, commencement no cabbage. I added a can of diced tomatoes and ii ounces of tomato paste. I as well use Better than Bullion instead of stock. Nice and thick, rich and smashing on a chilly Sunday evening.
07/thirteen/2021
Recipe equally it stands is good, merely not great. Personally, the side by side time I make information technology, I would season and brown the meat as the commencement stride. I'd and so remove the meat and sauté the veggies. So I'd put in some stock (not all) and scrape up the fond. And so I'd continue with the recipe as js. I besides added corn and cutting green beans.
06/01/2021
I replaced the cabbage (husband hates cabbage) with frozen mixed veg and upped the wine to a cup. With those alterations, I have to say, this is i of the best soups I've ever fabricated. (As well used iii boxes of no-fat beef stock, instead of the author'southward water and soup base.) Yum!
04/14/2018
Great soup - used a portion of a left over beef roast /broth from the slow cooker. Left out the potatoes but added some frozen vegetables. For liquid, I used 32oz beef goop with the existing broth / meat that I saved prior. I used 1 cup of the barley.
01/19/2019
First-class hearty soup! Didn't substitute a thing, fabricated it exactly every bit directed and was very happy with the end upshot! Next time I might try the Italian herb mix instead of the thyme as I beloved basil and oregano. Definitely a keeper!
04/09/2018
I made information technology, adding some actress qty of veggies.... It was freakin Awesome.....love it
x/02/2017
I used leftover pot roast, i.e. cooked potatoes, carrots and onions. I as well used a not-alcoholic scarlet wine blend. I is the best beef and barley soup I've ever made. Wonderful.
07/01/2017
Had some leftover prime rib and this seemed like a good style to use it. Followed recipe exactly. It was delicious, although seemed a little apartment. I am going to endeavor adding a couple of tablespoons of tomato plant paste while cooking the vegetables.
03/03/2018
I honey this soup
xi/thirteen/2021
I thought it came out swell! I used a Chuck Roast and instead of Barley I used Angel Hair broken in one-half. Added a teaspoon of the Gravy Master and it added just the right amount of darkness and flavor. I tried attaching a photo but this website wont permit me.
eleven/xx/2016
I didn't accept red wine or cabbage available. still first-class!
07/22/2019
Great recipe, like shooting fish in a barrel to make. I used low sodium beef stock and information technology worked out great.
02/06/2016
Would definitely make this again. I used 10 cups h2o and 8 beef cubes due to the fact that the beef in the Dominican Republic has NO flavour. I browned the beef with onions, added the water and beef cubes. Once the beef was starting to go tender, I added the barley (we can actually become barley here now!). When that was virtually cooked, I added the rest of the ingredients minus the cabbage as I don't eat it. Soup turned out groovy. Oh, and I didn't add the crimson wine because if I opened the bottle, well......let's just leave it at that ;) Otherwise, swell soup!
05/xviii/2020
Super peachy depth of flavor. I used 12 cups of stock, red potatoes, and chopped all my veggies on the smaller size. The kids LOVED information technology!!!! I did use some roast from a few nights ago that had massive season so that helped too (slow cooked with ranch dressing mix and Au jus mix).
03/17/2016
This is awesome soup! I threw it all together in the crock pot. I decreased the amount of stock (water plus beef bullion) to viii cups. I followed some of the reviews and only used one/ii cup barley. I like barley then adjacent fourth dimension I volition add together the whole amount. I took some to a friend who is recovering from pneumonia. She said who needs pills when you lot accept this soup? I will definitely brand this again.
12/09/2017
Very good. Made it with craven stock because I couldn't notice depression sodium beef goop. Also used dry thyme vs fresh. Other than that, I followed the recipe. Felt information technology needed a trivial bit more than flavour possibly due to the lack of common salt, but served it with a dollop of horseradish and that was a success!
11/twenty/2017
This was my first beef barley soup I've always made. Turned out pretty skillful.
06/24/2020
Expert mode to employ up roast beef. I reduced potatoes to one/2 cup and added 1 cup turnip. Definitely a keeper.
